Scottish History For All
Patron Dr. Fiona J. Watson
Scottish History for All (Eachdraidh Albannach) is a voluntary body, which was
set up in the year 2002, to promote knowledge of Scottish history and Gaelic.
The founder members felt that there was a need for easily accessible, good
quality information about Scottish history. In general it has been a much
neglected area within the Scottish schools system.
Gaelic and its position within Scottish society has also been greatly neglected,
and at times actively discouraged. The group wished to give Gaelic its place
within mainstream Scottish history, and has arranged Gaelic learners' classes in
conjunction with Clackmannanshire Council.
Scottish History for All is run by a committee of volunteers. It organises
monthly lectures at a variety of venues with lecturers who are experts in their
own particular field. The lectures are informal and easy to understand, and there
is an opportunity to ask questions at the end. It is a successful format, which
has allowed the group to build up a membership list of almost 70.
It also arranges field trips to places of historical interest.
The group receives no funding, but the popularity of lectures combined with the
low entry charge (£2.50) has allowed the group to continue to grow and retain the
services of excellent lecturers.
Our aims are:
-
To run a series of lectures accessible to all;
-
To promote Gaelic development through publicity, by organizing Gaelic Awareness
Days, and by supporting Gaelic Adult Learner’s and conversational classes;
-
To organize cultural and heritage events.
